Exfoliate or not to exfoliate

Quite often the topic of whether we should exfoliate our face is debated . Okay so should we or not ? The answer is yes however a yes with caution . Why ? Well we don’t all have the same skin types and it’s normal for any of us to have a period of sensitive skin . The thought of exfoliating our face that’s sore and red is the worst idea . Skin that has bad acne may also be a no go . Should we avoid then ? Not all the time no . I think that common sense applies to our skin and of it is having its moment of being sensitive and having a breakout then we would leave an exfoliation well alone . Some exfoliants that are the ingredient in the face product we use can be great for the skin but look at with some caution . Why ? Well exfoliators say for the body may contain salt or sugar which are body scrubs rather than exfoliators the same thing but you wouldn’t scrub your face with sandpaper . Basically in a body scrub or exfoliator the little particle bits that could be from Walnut shell or like I mentioned salt or sugar are like a rougher sandpaper grade . However for our little delicate chops we need a softer and less aggressive product . Face exfoliators can use walnut shell however it would be smaller particles and have less ratio of them . Pumice powder in our face scrub is gentle enough for the face . If I wanted a pumice exfoliator on my legs I would expect more course pumice . We may of all used a pumice stone on our feet for example . Not for the face tho ! Other common Ingredients in a face exfoliator . Jojoba wax beads often mistaken for plastic , micro plastic beads are banned in the UK so check out the label.
Black pepper is sometimes added to soaps this can be a bit scratchy tho from personal experience . Coffee grounds are common . Get the bathroom cleaner to hand tho . Ground Almonds are also an added exfoliator .
yep it’s a exfoliating mine field isn’t it and can get very confusing . Don’t worry tho just go with what suits your skin and don’t be put off with not knowing which one to purchase . salicylic acid Is sometimes used in a exfoliator as this is great for spot prone skin as it’s effective for unclogging pores , that’s another Blog subject tho . Pesky spots .
Always avoid the delicate eye area as our skin is thinner around here . Freshly shaved skin is deffo a no go in fact that could cause a big old flare up . I would always use an exfoliator before a shave tho . Everyday ? Depends on who you ask . Personally twice or three times a week max . Any more than that your causing your face to become more and more sensitised . Great cheeky tip tho for you is before your suntan and during your suntan is a good time to exfoliate as it helps your lovely tan stay longer and you will go darker . Don’t worry it won’t rub off . Do worry if you have sunburn tho that’s not good news and you wouldn’t then exfoliate . Do use a great deep absorbing moisturiser tho .
share with me your experiences I would love to read what you have used in your routine . Here’s to great Mens skincare .
